A cold famine hits Appleloosa, and they barely have enough apples to supply the town- Not to mention the coming buffalo, which they agreed to supply with apple pies in exchange for land to plant their orchards on. Braeburn, one of the Equestrian settlers, suffers a horrible accident just days before the buffalo are supposed to arrive for their pies. Since proper firewood is now scarce in Appleloosa, he was using foliage to burn in his fireplace, when a large explosion burns off his coat, his mane, and his cutie mark. Insane with paranoia, he spies on the Buffalo camp and sees the Buffalo preparing for war. When he goes to escape, he is stopped by two Buffalo who block his path. Something breaks in Braeburn, who has taken to calling himself Burn, and he kills one and mutilates the other.
The Buffalo, who are enraged , destroy Appleloosa. Few survivors- Among them Sheriff Silverstar and Nurse Ironshoe, escape and make it to a nearby abandoned rest stop for engineer ponies who pull the trains that run from Appleloosa to Hoofington, the town closest to Ponyville so she could tell her friend, Twilight Sparkle, to contact the princess.
Braeburn goes to find his cousin Applejack, up the train track to Hoofington. When she had heard Braeburn got in an accident, she went to Appleloosa, only to be rushed off by a sanity-declining Braeburn. Walking all the way back to Hoofington, she can see the smoke from the battle of Appleloosa from miles away. She was intercepted by Braeburn, who had survived the battle on her way back.
